Daily Drivers: Great Watches for Under 5,000 Euros

Zenith’s star is rising within the LVMH group. The last few years have been especially successful for them. They’ve been consistently releasing innovative watches, as well as pieces that would be at home in a heritage collection. One piece that combines retro looks with state-of-the-art technology is the Zenith Heritage Revival Cronometro Tipo CP-2. Zenith looked to the vintage A. Cairelli chronograph used by the Italian army back in the 1960s and 1970s when designing this watch. The Cronometro CP-2 takes the lovely design of this classic timepiece and gives it an update for the modern day.

Fans of classic watches will enjoy its a simple round case, black rotating bezel with a 60-minute scale, and pump pushers. Zenith has also kept the distinct chronograph hand with a funky triangular tip coated in SuperLuminova. The 2016 limited edition is made of stainless steel with a solid steel case back. However, as of 2018, this timepiece is in series production, available in bronze or stainless steel, and features a sapphire glass case back. I personally find the fake patina on the dials of the latest models less attractive than this watch with a black dial and non-aged luminous indices and numerals. However, this Zenith Heritage Revival Cronometro Tipo CP-2 is “only” a chronograph, while its most recent sister models feature a flyback function.

Enthusiast’s Corner: Great Value for Your Money

Slim d’Hermès

Slowly but surely, the term “fashion watches” has taken on a new meaning. It no longer refers to those cheap, large, and shiny watches with quartz movements from mid-range fashion brands. Instead, you’ll now find timepieces with much more than a fancy name on the dial. Brands like Bvlgari or, in this case, Hermés are more well known for their jewelry or clothes than they are for their watches. At least, that was the case until recently.

Over the last few years, they’ve both introduced amazingly well-made and beautifully crafted timepieces worthy of any watch enthusiast’s attention. Hermés never ceases to amaze us with their new releases year after year. This Slim d’Hermés epitomizes the brand’s style and their approach to watches. It’s simple and elegant on the front, gorgeously decorated and complex on the back. The Slim d’Hermés is a 40-mm time-only watch in stainless steel and undeniably Hermés. It’s dripping with class and fitting for most any occasion, except perhaps a day at the beach.

Iconic Timepieces: Rare or Exceptional Timepieces

Rolex Daytona Cosmograph reference 6263 “Red Sultan”

This isn’t a watch you see very often. In fact, it’s so rare that seeing one “in the metal” is a pretty notable achievement. The Rolex Daytona Cosmograph reference 6263 “Red Sultan” isn’t considered an icon, it’s considered a legend. Some even consider it the “non plus ultra” for vintage Rolex Daytona collectors. The watch was made on special order for His Majesty Qaboos bin Said Al Said, the Sultan of Oman. It is thought to have been made somewhere around 1973-74 and features the crest of the royal family printed on the dial in red. As far as the watch itself, everything is consistent with a regular reference 6263: Valjoux 72 caliber, 37.5-mm case, and the Rolex 78350 bracelet. Due to the dial, however, this watch is anything but regular. Rumor has it only 15 of these watches were ever made. It’s so rare, in fact, that one example was sold last year by Phillips for 1,212,500 CHF. If you have the means to buy such a timepiece, here’s your chance to own one.
