Is it still worth buying an IWC Ingenieur?

The IWC Ingenieur is currently experiencing a remarkable comeback. After leading an almost forgotten life in the shadows for several years, it made a comeback in 2023. It is now once again a popular model in the luxury sports watch segment with an integrated wristband. Connoisseurs appreciate its iconic design by Gérald Genta and the high level of watchmaking craftsmanship that went into it. The combination of purism, technical sophistication, and a touch of vintage charm is enticing – especially as it is still very suitable for everyday use. Its robust case, characteristic “grid” dial and modern technology make it the perfect companion – whether in the office or during leisure time. But is now a good time to buy this watch? We explore this question for you.

Innovations Since Watches and Wonders 2025

Two years after its reappearance in 2023, IWC‘s Ingenieur collection has been massively expanded: A total of seven new models were unveiled at “Watches and Wonders 2025,” setting new standards in terms of both appearance and technology. The Ingenieur in 18-karat 5N gold and the spectacular black ceramic version in particular are real eye-catchers. At the same time, they are a highlight for technology fans, as IWC impressively demonstrates its leading position in the field of material processing. Also noteworthy is the introduction of the Ingenieur Automatic in a version with a diameter of 35 mm and a height of just 9.4 mm. It will appeal to lovers of smaller watches as well as women. But even the smaller versions do not compromise on their iconic appearance. There were also many technical innovations: Most of the current models rely on tried-and-tested IWC calibers, such as the 32111 with a 120-hour power reserve. The 35 mm version, on the other hand, was fitted with the new 47110 caliber. Particularly impressive, however, is the first Ingenieur with a perpetual calendar, which makes a clear statement about the line’s positioning in the high-end segment. With new sizes, materials, and complications, IWC manages the balancing act between tradition and innovation. This makes the Ingenieur more attractive than ever to a wider audience.

Design and Feel

The IWC Ingenieur impresses with its iconic design, which bears the signature of Gérald Genta. The characteristic “grid” dial with fine lines and squares and the striking bezel with five functional screws ensures it’s easily recognizable. The watch has a luxurious feel thanks to its balanced proportions and a skillful interplay of satin-finished and polished surfaces. The new gold or ceramic models in particular set strong visual accents and offer an exceptional wearing experience. Thanks to the different sizes ranging from 35 to 42 millimeters, every wrist type will find the right model. Anyone who values independent design, high-quality materials, and perfect ergonomics will find what they are looking for with the Ingenieur.

Technology

The IWC Ingenieur is also technically impressive. The latest models are equipped with modern in-house movements with high accuracy and impressive power reserves of up to 120 hours. The movements are visible through sapphire crystal backs and are lavishly finished with Côtes de Genève, gold-plated oscillating weights, and blued screws. The Ingenieur also scores points with practical features such as screw-down crowns and a water resistance of up to 10 bar. Since the introduction of complications such as the perpetual calendar and the choice of different case materials – from stainless steel to gold and ceramic – the Ingenieur covers a wide range of technical requirements.

Financial Performance

The price development of the IWC Ingenieur has shown a clear upward trend for several years. Particularly limited or sought-after references achieve high prices on the secondary market. The strong demand, the prominent design history, and the latest model innovations ensure that the Ingenieur holds its value well compared to other models.

Possible Alternatives to the IWC Ingenieur

The IWC Ingenieur is considered an icon among sporty luxury watches with an integrated bracelet. The design created by Gérald Genta has also left its mark on other brands. Those looking for alternatives will find the Royal Oak from Audemars Piguet or the Patek Philippe Nautilus in the luxury segment. Both were also designed by Genta and enjoy cult status. However, they are considerably more expensive and have long waiting lists. In terms of technical sophistication and sporty elegance, the Rolex Milgauss or the Rolex Explorer would also be good alternatives, although they follow a different design concept. The best alternative, which incorporates the Genta design without breaking the bank, is clearly the Tissot PRX, which pays homage to the classics of the 1970s with its integrated bracelet and striking dial. The Longines Conquest is another watch with sporty, elegant design and solid technology at an attractive price. These alternatives are aimed at anyone who appreciates the look of the Ingenieur but does not necessarily need the prestige or technology of IWC.

Final Thoughts

In 2025, the IWC Ingenieur is still one of the most exciting watch icons for lovers of sporty luxury watches. With the latest additions to the collection, new sizes and materials, and a return to the classic Genta design, IWC has struck a chord with the times and made the watch attractive to a wider audience. Despite higher prices, the Ingenieur impresses with its high quality of workmanship, suitability for everyday use, and unmistakable design that stands out from the crowd. For collectors and design fans who are interested in the history of watches, the purchase is still worthwhile – not least because of the stable price performance and the enduring cult status of the Ingenieur.

The moment I learned that watches were a lot more than just simple jewelry, I was hooked; I become enamored with the elegance of timekeeping. But there was one small hitch: most models were just too big for me to wear! That didn't discourage me, however. In fact, I developed quite a niche interest.
